    Description

Pasteur, Louis (1822 -1895) - Fine content autograph letter signed “anthrax after vaccination”
French chemist and microbiologist, popularly known as the "father of microbiology".
Autograph letter signed “L. Pasteur”. 1p., 5.0 x 8.0 inch, Paris, 1883 May 23. Addressed to the President of the Hérault Agricultural Society, who had experimented with his vaccinations against the anthrax of sheep. This fine letter deals with the duration of immunity against anthrax after vaccination. Mailing folds, minor stains on the left, else good condition. In May 1881, Pasteur performed a famous public experiment at Pouilly-le-Fort to demonstrate his concept of vaccination. He prepared two groups of 25 sheep, one goat and several cows. The animals of one group were twice injected, with an interval of 15 days, with an anthrax vaccine prepared by Pasteur; a control group was left unvaccinated. Thirty days after the first injection, both groups were injected with a culture of live anthrax bacteria. All the animals in the non-vaccinated group died, while all of the animals in the vaccinated group survived. The public reception was sensational.
