    Description

KARL LASHLEY, Father Biological Psychology, Pioneer in Brain Research, Autograph Letter Signed in Ink with Notable Scientific and Personal Content, 1957. An exemplary, rare piece in the history of neurology, psychology, and brain research.
Karl Lashley was one of the fathers of modern brain research and is considered a pioneer in understanding of learning and memory. This is a very significant autograph letter with personal as well as scientific content, written and signed in ink by one of the fathers of modern brain research. Lashley’s “law of mass action” tied brain function (learning and memory) to brain structure (the amount of cortex available) and propelled modern studies on the physiology of learning and memory. This typed letter, signed in pen by Lashley, is unique in being “content laden”. Written in 1957 to neurophysiologist K. Chow, it refers to Prof. Karl Pribram who has been called the “Magellan of the mind” for his seminal studies on the frontal lobes and the limbic system. This remarkable letter refers to scientific manuscripts and also to Lashley’s personal life; “How the hell can you expect me to read anything... when I am going to get married?“. Autographed letters referring to scientific contributions are very rare, and letters referring so explicitly to personal matters are even rarer. This 1957 letter by one of the founders of brain research is signed clearly, in ink.
I am a serious collector of high-quality medical autographs, with an emphasis on neuroscience. This letter was given to me in the early 1980s by a colleague who knew Lashley. I am now selling some of these pieces because we are downsizing.
My intent is to find the right home for this remarkable and important autograph letter. Serious offers will be considered.
