JOHN HAYS HAMMOND SR. - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 04/22/1925 - HFSID 261526
    JOHN HAYS HAMMOND
TLS to an old school friend, reminiscing about his freshman year
    TLS: "
    John Hayes Hammond
    ", 1p, 5¾x7¾ affixed to 6x9¼ sheet.
    Washington, D.C., 1925 April 22.
To W. A. Shelton, New York City.
    In full:
    "
I am very glad to get your letter which reminds me of our pleasant association years ago. I think the time to which you elude when I was greatly discouraged was in my Freshman year. I had attended two recitations when I had a very severe attack of dysentary
    (sic)
which laid me up in bed for a couple of months or more, and it seemed a difficult matter to make up my lessons but however I remember doing so and came out through hard work and good luck in the first ten at the end of the year. That is the highest I ever got though I passed second in the entrance examination for Sheffield, Ned Ryerson beating me by a small percentage. Some day when I go to New York and can find the spare time I shall endeavor to get in touch with you again.
" Mining engineer Hammond (1855-1936), a graduate of Yale's Sheffield Scientific School, examined mines around the globe. The consulting engineer to Consolidated Gold Fields of South Africa, British South Africa Company and Randountein Estates Gold Mining Company, he was one of four leaders in a reform movement in the Transvaal (1895-1896). After the Jameson Raid (which he did not support), Hammond was arrested and sentenced to death. After payment of a fine, Hammond went to London before returning to the U.S., where he traveled extensively to examine mines in the U.S. and Mexico.
Between 1926 and 1929, Hammond built a medieval style mansion in Gloucester, Massachusetts, known today as Hammond Castle. It also housed Hammond's laboratory, from which he patented over 400 inventions. Hammond, second only to Thomas Edison in number of patents granted, is especially known for developing radio remote control technology.
Lightly rippled, light show through at perimeter from mounting. Folds, vertical fold touches the "n" in John. Mounting sheet is lightly creased, has irregular left edge.
