Description

Johannes Stark autograph letter signed, dated 3 July 1915 during World War I. In this letter to fellow Nobel Prize winning scientist Wilhelm Wien, Stark discusses an upcoming event of "physicists in Germany and Austria", and asks Wien if he has "the anti-German declaration of the English scholars". This declaration was in response to the "Manifesto of the Ninety-Three" issued by German scientists in October 1914, and signed by Wien, defending atrocities committed by the German military in Belgium. Interestingly, the manifesto was not signed by Stark, a well-known German nationalist during World War II. Letter also includes scientific content, with Stark writing about his underwater telegraphy experiments and the need for more effective equipment. Three page letter in German is signed "J. Stark" at conclusion, on bifolium stationery measuring 5.5" x 8.75" as folded. Near fine condition. With full translation.
