AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY CHARLES DARWIN ACCEPTING HALF OF YEAR’S WORTH OF RENT ON HIS PROPERTY WHILE SUFFERING FROM CHAGAS DISEASE
Autograph letter signed by Charles Darwin to his financial advisor, John Higgins, that reads in full: “My dear Sir, I acknowledge with thanks ￡248:2.1 (rent).  I am ill so pay my wife.  Yours very faithfully, Ch. R. Darwin.  J. Higgins Esq.”  Exactly four years after the publication of
On the Origin of Species
, Darwin accepts half of a year’s worth of rent on his property while suffering from Chagas Disease.  Higgins (1795/6-1872) acted as Darwin’s land agent from 1845, when Robert Waring Darwin, Darwin’s father, bought on his son’s behalf a farm in Beesby near Claythorpe and Alford in Lincolnshire.  Higgins managed the farm and collected the rent for Darwin.  The letter is one page with docketing on the verso, on Down Bromley stationery, created in Kent on December 4, 1863, measures 8 by 5 inches, and in fine condition with minor creasing, minor toning, and small paper loss on the bottom right corner.
