Description
1972 GETZEN MODEL 590S "CAPRI" ~ SILVER PLATED MEDIUM LARGE BORE (.460") Bb TRUMPET IN NEAR MINT CONDITION ~ A HALF CENTURY OLD TIME CAPSULEI have been playing horns for 66 years...collecting and restoring vintage trumpets and cornets, producing custom finishes, and building custom horns for 55 years. Over the decades I amassed a vast trumpet/ cornet collection. During the past few years I have thinned out the herd and continue to do so.
All my horns are gig ready...they have been completely disassembled, cleaned, valves are hand lapped and precision adjusted & aligned with new corks & felts when necessary, all slide tubes are hand lapped and polished, and then the horn is re-assembled and play tested.
PLEASE LOOK AT THE OTHER HORNS I HAVE LISTED
For your consideration, here is an awesome 50 year old Getzen Capri 590S that is a true time capsule in like new near mint condition. It is straight without dents nor repairs of any nature whatsoever. The trumpet comes with its original case, Benge 7C mouthpiece, care kit, and silver polishing cloth. The case interior is flawless suggesting this horn saw VERY little use...valve oil stains are usually present where the bottom valve caps rest. Prior to the 1963 factory fire, Carl "Doc" Severinsen (Johnny Carson's bandleader on the "Tonight Show") became affiliated with Getzen, and as chief of research and development, designed the 900 Eterna and 590 Capri series of trumpets and cornets. Both series were introduced in the fall of 1964 and garnered immediate kudos. Initially, the Capri was cataloged as a semi-pro trumpet, but was demoted to intermediate status years later upon the introduction of the Eterna 700. Nonetheless, it was good enough for Chet Baker who played one from 1986 through 1987, and used it on all of his recording sessions during
that period.
The current production Capri 590S-S (1st slide thumb saddle instead of a trigger that appears to be no longer offered, and which added 0. to the price) can be found at a deep discount for ,567. Why pay that price when you can have this incredible, half century old time capsule that IMHO, is better built, has a better fit and finish than the current models, and has a 1st slide trigger rather than a saddle. Lastly, this 1972 example still retains the solid nickel dodecahedron (12-sided) valve caps that were standard on all vintage pre-1963 Getzen models...much nicer than what is on the current models!
This 590S Capri is a fairly lightweight weight 2 lb. - 4.8 oz. trumpet that will accommodate virtually any music style and acoustic venue. The trumpet has a clear and resonant tone that is easily controlled...its sound is big, bold, rather round, centered and focused. It is a free and open blowing horn with a rich, slightly warm tone that produces a sophisticated edge when pushed, and loves to be piloted in the stratosphere.
This horn has excellent intonation...the low register is not flat, and is very resonant. The 5th harmonic is great, and so is the upper register intonation. Slots are superb.
Responsive and flexible, the 590S makes a great jazz horn, but will perform well playing commercial, legit, and even works well in studio sessions.
Mechanically, the trumpet is in superb like new condition with lightning fast valves that are bright and shiny, without staining nor pitting, and have factory spec compression. All slides operate with buttery smoothness including the 1st slide trigger. Cosmetically, the trumpet does exhibit the following minor blemishes: 1. There are some small mute ripples on the inside of the bell flare that are not as evident on the exterior of the flare; 2. There is a small area of acid bleed at 9 o'clock on the bell rim from the flux used to solder the rim 50 years ago; 3. Lastly, there is a tiny ping on the apex of the 3rd slide crook more than likely caused by hitting the bell rim during extraction. The original owner probably took 2 or 3 lessons, created these minor blemishes in a short period of time, and lost interest...I'm glad that I rescued it in this condition! Otherwise, the rest of the horn is as close to 50 years new as I have ever encountered.
I tend to be overly critical and as accurate as possible when describing my horns, so that no one receives any "surprises". So, bid with confidence as I think you'll find my feedback speaks for itself.
