Description
1783 Washington Copper or "Cent". As noted in Breen, struck by the Soho Mint in Birmingham circa 1820, to circulate alongside U. S. Federal Large Cents as a token issue of convenience. This was legal (until the 1850's) as the U. S. Large Cent had limited or no legal tender value at the time. Regardless, popular as a representation of the "Father of the Country", and they certainly did see commercial use. In the "Redbook" and commonly collected along with the traditional Colonial issues. Almost Uncirculated with very little wear, although struck from a later die state as evidenced by the die crack at the base of “Independence”.Decent Brown surfaces overall with a small hint or two of original planchet color in the most protected areas of the Reverse, although the luster is a bit lacking/muted due to the less than ideal storage it saw for two Centuries.
Repatriated from England, where it was undoubtedly saved as a souvenir, hence the very light area of corrosion at the end of “Washington”, as well as a couple of spots.
Not too surprising given the composition and climate.
The details are equivalent to a high end AU based upon observed PCGS specimens, the weakness along the top of “Washington” due to strike and matching a number of other PCGS coins for location. Due to the light corrosion on the surface, which is “soft” and might be removable by someone more skilled (and ballsy) than I, I did not feel this worthy of submission. So offered here at a value that hopefully will tempt someone. Guaranteed genuine of course. I am happy to combine shipping for multiple items.
