The tin market collapsed in England during 1679 to 1680, and to keep the mines opened, the 1/24 RL was invented as a tin coin. When exposed to extreme cold, tin will immediately turn to dust and had never really been used as a monetary device. Somehow, the Tin miners convinced King James II government to begin issuing tin coins as farthings and half pence. Henry Guy, the King's secretary hatched the idea for the Tower Mint to begin minting coins for the American Plantations ( as The American Colonies were known ) and the rest is history.
